Cord, the cotton fabric with seemingly eternal life, is the new star in autumn fashion and brings a touch of retro to the wardrobe. Anyone born in the 70s or 80s inevitably combines memories of corduroy overalls or bell bottoms, skirts in questionable lengths and unfavorable blazers – preferably in beige and brown tones. But the times are over.
Cord takes off its dusty image as a pensioner fabric and gets a cool upgrade in autumn thanks to new fresh colors and cuts. It’s no wonder that bloggers, influencers and fashion professionals rely on cord from head to toe. And the trendy cotton fabric has a big advantage: the dense material keeps you warm and is therefore a welcome alternative to jeans in winter.
Why is cord hip again?
We owe the revival of the cord to numerous fashion labels and designers, including Mulberry, Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Prada. In the wake of the ubiquitous retro wave, the designers have given the material an unprecedented rise with fresh colors and contemporary cuts. Prada made big eyes in the front row with a complete corduroy suit in fiery rust red, Gucci designer Alessandro Michele went even further and showed pants in bright blue with a floral print. And with Off-White, Lemaire or Tory Burch, Cord was seen more than once on the catwalk.
The fashion trend has long since arrived on the streets and in stores. Large fashion chains such as Mango, Zara or H&M have quickly picked up on the trend and bloggers are flooding the feeds of fashion fans with their corduroy outfits. Particularly popular: corduroy pants or complete looks in dusky pink. Combine cord: the best tips
The challenge with styling cord is not to let the look get stale and look like it got stuck in the 70s. The best way to do this is with a deliberately chosen mix of materials and strong contrasts. Fine materials such as silk, satin or processed viscose look great with the coarse cotton fabric and make the look modern. But cord looks from head to toe are also popular: combine a statement shirt and casual sneakers with a combination of a corduroy jacket and trousers. Those who are not yet able to make friends with complete cord looks may like accessories and shoes made from cord. Yes, that’s right, we’ll see corduroy shoes everywhere in autumn. Not only in the boot version, pumps or sneakers made of cord are also popular.
Ever since Sean Wotherspoon presented his newly designed Nike Air Max Hybrid, the run on cord shoes started. Online auction houses offered incredible sums of up to $ 2,500 for the sneaker model in question. So it is only a matter of time before other designers follow suit.
